“President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid on working visits to Georgia, Latvia, and Ukraine this week”


Today, Wednesday 12 September, President Kersti Kaljulaid is on a working visit to Georgia ahead of the meeting of the heads of state of the Arraiolos Group in Latvia tomorrow and Friday and the annual Jalta European Strategy conference in Ukraine at the end of the week.

In Tbilisi President Kaljulaid is meeting with her Georgian counterpart Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze to discuss relations between their two countries, security policy and Georgia’s relations with the European Union and NATO. President Kaljulaid will also be speaking at the ‘World in 2018: Upside Down?’ international conference in the Georgian capital.

On Thursday and Friday, the Estonian Head of State will be contributing to the discussions of the Arraiolos Group in Latvia. The main themes of this year’s meeting are boosting resistance in society, European security and the future of the European Union. While in Latvia, President Kaljulaid will also be holding a bilateral meeting with German president Frank Walter Steinmeier to discuss relations between Estonia and Germany, the future of Europe, transatlantic relations and Ukraine. The Arraiolos Group is the name given to the series of informal meetings that started in 2003 to which Heads of State who are not involved in the European Council are invited.

On Friday President Kaljulaid will travel on to Ukraine, where she will meet with President Petro Poroshenko to discuss the process of reform in the country, bilateral economic relations and the Ukrainian investment environment. The Head of State will also be taking part in the Jalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, at which she will be contributing to discussions on the topics of the digital society and rule of law, and attending the opening of the LIFT99 office (an Estonian co-working hub and network of start-up founders) in the Ukrainian capital. On Saturday President Kaljulaid will be in Dnipro, the biggest center in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where she will be visiting the Estonian-owned Interpipe factory and the Anti-terrorism Operations Museum and taking part in clean-up activities as part of World Cleanup Day.

President Kaljulaid will return to Estonia late on Saturday evening.
