The President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor is taking part in a three-day meeting of Nordic and Baltic presidents of parliaments in Lillehammer on 21–23 August. The eight Speakers will discuss how to ensure the security of our region, as well as relations with Russia, and the conflict in Ukraine.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland will speak on respecting the law, human rights and democratic values in Europe against the backdrop of increasing populism. The President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert will talk about the role of the national parliaments in the European future, as well as about the Eastern Partnership.
The Nordic-Baltic cooperation, or NB8, has been bringing the five Nordic and the three Baltic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) around the same table since 1992. The first meeting of the NB8 Speakers took place in 1997 in Karlskrona, Sweden.
The purpose of the regular meetings of the Nordic and Baltic presidents of parliaments is informal discussion of the current regional and international topics.
