Estonia holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time from July until the end of December. This event is important for the Estonian state and people, and its arrival will be marked with a free concert on Freedom Square.
Performers include popular Estonian artists and groups: Vaiko Eplik, Kadri Voorand and Mari Jürjens with the Estonian Cello Ensemble, Kukerpillid, Genka, Winny Puhh, Estonian Voices, NOËP, Frankie Animal and Miljardid. The audience will be greeted by Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission and Jüri Ratas, the Prime Minister of Estonia.
A café area will be created on the square in collaboration with the Tallinn Street Food Festival, where Estonia’s diverse communities and family restaurants will offer a variety of foods that people can enjoy before, during and after the concert.
The stages and café area have been designed by Sille Pihlak and Siim Tuksam from the PART architectural practice, which was the recipient of the Estonian Young Architect of the Year Award this year. The design reflects the aims of the Estonian Presidency and its underlying theme ‘Unity through Balance’, combining unspoiled nature and an innovative digital society. The wood installations that serve as design elements are based on the thicket motif and symbolise Estonia’s connection with nature, but also the challenges and opportunities presented by new technology; they reflect an identity that cherishes traditions but is also open and constantly changing.
The performances will be blended into a continuous stream by the composer, DJ and producer Sander Mölder.
