Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson thinks that the Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matvijenko is badly informed if she holds Estonia responsible for stalling the ratification of the border treaty between Estonia and Russia.
Mihkelson believes that Matviyenko is sincerely unaware of the fact that the border treaties have already been signed, and that the Estonian side is a step closer to their ratification.
“At the same time we are aware that the final ratification of the treaties can only take place when the Russian parliament is also ready for that – and the Russian side knows this perfectly well,” Mihkelson said. “Estonia is completely blameless in this.”
At the International Forum of Border Regions in Pskov, Russia, the Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matvijenko said that the ball was in Estonia’s court. She stressed that Moscow had already taken all the necessary steps.
“You have to put this question to the Estonian, not to the Russian side,” Matviyenko said on Thursday, answering the question of an Estonian journalist on when the treaties would finally move forward. “We have done everything in our power to regulate the issue. We hope that our Estonian partners complete their proceedings to sign the treaties,” BNS news agency reported via Interfax.
The Bill on the Ratification of the Estonian-Russian State Border Treaties passed the first reading in the Riigikogu on 25 November 2015. The border treaties had been signed by the two Foreign Ministers on 18 February of the same year.
