Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Marko Mihkelson and Deputy Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the RiigikoguKeit Pentus-Rosimannus participate in the meetings of the delegations of the three Baltic States with the leading members of the United States Congress in Washington, DC, from today to Thursday to discuss the security cooperation with the USA.
The main subject of the meetings will be the relations of the US and the European allies, and also the relations of Estonia and other Baltic States with the US during the new administration.
On Tuesday morning, Mihkelson will meet with Senator Joe Manchin, who is a member of the Armed Services Committee and one of the possible candidates for the Secretary of State.
The joint visit of the Baltic parliamentarians will begin with the meeting with co-chairmen of the Baltic Friendship Group of the House of Representatives of the US Congress John Shimkus and Adam Schiff. In Tuesday evening there will be a round-table meeting with the researchers of the think tank Heritage Foundation about the issues of security and NATO.
On Wednesday, the members of the Baltic parliaments will meet with the Majority Leader of the Senate Mitch McConnell and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Bob Corker. Senators Richard Burr (Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee), Ben Cardin (Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations), John McCain (Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee), Richard Durbin (Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense), Robert Menendex, John Barrasso, Joni Ernst, Chris Murphy and Sherrod Brown will also take part in the meeting with McConnell.
The parliamentarians from the Baltic States will also meet with the Chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ed Royce and Ranking Member of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs Eliot Engel.
Mihkelson and Pentus-Rosimannus will also attend the forum organised by the OSCE Committee of the US Congress that will deal with the security situation in the Baltic States, and the round table at the think tank Atlantic Council.
On Thursday, the parliamentarians of the three Baltic States will meet with Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain. Mihkelson and Pentus-Rosimannus will also have a meeting with Chairman of the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Devin Nunes.
